Two members of Occupy Miami and a member of the Palm Beach County Coalition for Immigrant Rights were arrested today around 4:45pm after participating in a direct action for Prison Divestment National Day of Action. These and other activists were at the Boca Raton Resort and Club where the 2012 GAIM Conference is being held.
The Global Alternative Investments Management Conference gathers Investors and Fund Managers to develop and promulgate strategies for maximizing their bottom line: profits. The activists were specifically protesting the role these investment funds play in the corrupt private prison industry and called upon investors to divest from the immigrant detention and private prison industry. Private prisons, especially those specializing in holding immigrants have been exposed by three independent studies for hosting terrible human rights abuses, including sexual abuse and rape.
The two largest private prison companies, Corrections Corporation of America and the Geo Group have been found liable in cases of wrongful death, child abuse, and prisoner abuse.
The protest was organized by Enlace, FLIC, Occupy Palm Beach, NPA, PICO, and other allies.
Other groups have also been targeting the GAIM Conference, click here to read more updates on the Earth First for other protests at the GAIM Conference
